As a clarinet player for over forty years, I’ve often laughed at this classic joke: How many clarinetists does it take to change a lightbulb? The answer: who knows? But they’ll go through countless boxes of lightbulbs searching for just the right one! My experience spans soprano, alto, and bass clarinets, and even saxophones. While playing the saxophone can be challenging at high levels, it’s relatively easy for beginners. On the other hand, playing the clarinet feels like a commitment to a lifelong journey—sacrificing time and effort to truly master it. For some, like me, the clarinet’s unique qualities make it all worthwhile, even more so than the saxophone (though mastering the clarinet does make playing the saxophone and other woodwinds easier).
That’s why I was drawn to the Nuvo Dood. I wanted a compact musical instrument to take on motorcycle camping trips. Initially, I considered harmonicas, ukuleles, and various percussion options, but ultimately decided on this “camping clarinet.” Given my extensive experience, it made sense; however, a traditional clarinet wouldn’t withstand the rough conditions of the dusty trails in the western USA. The Nuvo Dood, on the other hand, appears durable enough for that kind of environment, and at just $30 (as of December 2023), it’s affordable to replace if necessary.
Upon receiving the Nuvo Dood from Amazon, I was pleased to find it well-packaged in a soft case. It comes with two synthetic reeds, with strengths of 1 and 1.5. The instrument is made of a sturdy plastic that doesn’t feel cheap, while the mouthpiece cap, bell, and keys are made from a robust silicone material. The reed is secured to the mouthpiece with a clever clamping mechanism.
When I first played it, I was genuinely surprised by the excellent tone for such a simple instrument. While it doesn’t exactly replicate a traditional clarinet, it’s close enough for my camping needs. It offers one octave and is fully chromatic in the key of C, which is ideal if you plan to play with others. If it had been in Bb like a standard soprano clarinet, the lack of extra finger keys would have made it less versatile for remote keys. Within minutes, I had it figured out and was enjoying playing tunes that sounded fantastic.
Camping trips just got a whole lot more enjoyable. I highly recommend the Nuvo Dood, and if you play the flute or saxophone, they have options for those instruments as well!

This little gem is such a fun toy to have around! After playing basic rock band instruments for 20 years, I wanted to branch out. I started with the JSax and have been exploring brass and woodwinds at flea markets and on eBay, but I always found the prices too high. These D00ds have created a seriously affordable beginner instrument.
I can’t understand why anyone would hesitate to get this as a starter or practice tool. I used to wear Jenco jeans, flip through guitar magazines, and dream of saving up for a $100 guitar on my $5 allowance. This Dood is revolutionary to me—it’s technology making instruments accessible to everyone. Is it expert quality? Absolutely not, as that level of craftsmanship involves metal and cellulose that I can’t even fathom.
But for beginners? Definitely! It’s super easy to play and learn, and it’s a blast to mess around with. The ability to record for a song? Well, not quite… but the sound is quite pleasant for parents while their child or spouse practices. It’s not harsh or too loud, and as a musician with 20 years of experience in guitars and drums—not brass or woodwinds—I think it’s fantastic.
The embouchure is super easy to master, and from my experience with this company, they provide a few impressive reeds. I love experimenting with new instruments and plan to get all my new toys from this company because of their quality, ease of play, and learning. I really believe this company would be a great fit for schools.

Recently, I made a few late-night impulse buys, and unlike many, I have no regrets! I got the Toot, Dood, and jSax from Nuvo Instruments. So far, I’ve had the most fun with the Dood, but the Toot is the easiest to pick up and play thanks to its unique lip plate. I plan to tackle the jSax eventually. I also aim to grab the jHorn at some point because it looks really enjoyable. These instruments are designed for elementary classrooms, making them both sturdy and easy to clean. I love the feel of the silicone keys—they’re very satisfying to play. In my opinion, they’re all much more pleasant to listen to than a recorder, though the Toot does have a higher pitch than the other two.
They’re an incredible value for the price. I’d recommend the Toot for kids as young as 4-5, but I’d suggest waiting on the Dood until they have enough patience to master the embouchure. Honestly, for the price, you should treat yourself to one! Making music is beneficial for everyone.

A solid introduction to wind instruments.

Having recently developed an interest in the saxophone—a type of instrument I had never played before (I only learned two days ago that it’s called a reed instrument)—I found myself reminiscing about my flute-playing days from school over 40 years ago. Now, almost 55, I faced a dilemma: should I invest 500 euros and risk a saxophone mishap, or try something for 32 euros and potentially pass it on to my son if he takes an interest? I opted for the 32-euro option, and it opened up a whole new world for me.
The first 10 minutes were sheer panic; I struggled to produce sound, and all I got were some awful squeaks. However, after focusing, following online instructions, and watching a few videos, I finally managed to play! After just half an hour, I was making music—actual music! In the coming days, I plan to study and practice diligently, hoping to find the right technique to produce a good sound consistently. Of course, I know I’ll need to experiment each time, but as the saying goes in Rome, “nobody is born knowing.”
I highly recommend this for kids wanting to explore reed instruments, and for adults like me who are eager to try something new—though it’s not the simplest option. It’s a fun activity for everyone; even those who already play an instrument can enjoy it. The notes may not align perfectly with those of saxophones or clarinets, but they resemble flute notes, which helped me focus on air control without diving into complex key techniques just yet. It could also make a delightful gift for a friend who has jokingly said, “I’d love to try that.” Enjoy!
