I played the recorder back in middle school and recently wanted to learn the fingering for the Korean piece “Arirang.” Since I’m struggling with the danso (getting the airflow right is tough) and a quality Daegeum is beyond my budget (they start at over $700), I decided to go with a wooden recorder, opting for baroque fingering.
Initially, I found it frustrating because the sound would diminish after 10-15 minutes of play. After researching, I learned that breaking in the instrument is essential and that the airflow for a recorder differs significantly from that of a transverse flute. It requires a gentler breath and careful tongue positioning.
The process involves warming up the recorder (especially the mouthpiece) under my arm, then playing for about 5 minutes daily for the first week, gradually increasing to 10 and then 15 minutes. Since I purchased a used recorder, I was able to extend my playing time. Once warmed up, the tone is remarkableāwarm and rich, but it will let you know when it’s time to stop for the day if the sound deteriorates despite correct fingering. After playing, it’s important to clean it, dry it, and store it upright outside the case to prolong its life for the next session.
As for my progress, Iāve managed to get half of the fingering for “Arirang” down. I noticed some reviews mentioned gifting this recorder to children, only to find it damaged; I wouldnāt recommend giving a wooden recorder to kids. It requires patience to warm up, and younger players typically want instant gratification. A cheap plastic option, like a Yamaha, is better for beginners. Once they show genuine interest and learn to care for their instruments, then investing in a wooden recorder would be more appropriate.
Overall, the recorder has performed well for me, though breaking it in does require patience. I suggest watching videos on the break-in process and airflow management, as the techniques differ significantly between woodwinds, and prior experience doesnāt guarantee immediate success.

I purchased this as a replacement for a cheap plastic recorder I lost during a recent move. The case is impressively sturdy and well-made, featuring a molded plastic insert with a soft, velvet-like finish inside. I do wish there was a larger compartment for my own cork grease stick, but it fits on the plastic insert without causing any issues with closing the case.
The block seems to be fixed in place, which makes cleaning the mouthpiece a bit challenging. For this reason, I wouldn’t recommend it for multiple players.
Included with the recorder are some cork grease, a cleaning rod, a canvas case, and a fingering chart. The chart is quite basic and includes both Baroque and German fingerings, so it’s important to read it carefully.
The overall sound quality is good, although I’m struggling a bit to achieve a consistently nice toneāit’s more responsive to embouchure changes than my previous recorder. Hitting the upper register reliably is also tricky, but that might just be my issue.
In summary, I’m pleased to have this instrument to replace my lost resin recorder, and I’m willing to invest the time to master it and make it truly sing.
