I’ve always wanted to learn the violin, and a few weeks ago, I finally decided to go for it. After researching on Amazon, I found this set. While some negative reviews made me hesitant, the numerous positive ones convinced me to purchase it.

When the violin arrived, it was all set up, but as expected, it needed tuning. I had some trouble tuning it, even though I’ve tuned a guitar before. My lack of experience with an instrument that has a bridge led to me accidentally knocking it over while tightening the strings. I was hesitant to fix the bridge myself since it felt delicate and I didn’t want to damage anything. So, I took it to school and got help from someone in the music department. If you’re new to tuning a string instrument, especially one with a bridge, I strongly recommend seeking assistance from a music store or someone knowledgeable. After that initial setup, tuning became easier; I invested in a fantastic tuner:

Snark SN-5 Tuner for Guitar, Bass, and Violin.

    It’s user-friendly and incredibly helpful!

Next, I attempted to assemble the shoulder rest, only to find it didn’t fit my 4/4 full-size violin. Since Amazon fulfilled the order, I reached out to customer service, which was excellent. They offered to either replace the entire set or credit me for the shoulder rest. I opted for the credit and purchased the

Everest EZ Series Shoulder Rest for 4/4 Violin.

It fits perfectly, is affordable, and seems much more comfortable than the original.

Then I moved on to the bow. I wasn’t impressed; some hairs were looser than others. However, for a violin set priced around $60-70, I didn’t expect top-notch quality. I used the rosin (which required some prep with sandpaper) to get the bow ready, but I eventually bought better rosin since the included one felt subpar. I chose the

Pirastro Goldflex Rosin For Violin – Viola – Cello.

The basic rosin might suffice, but I wanted something a little better.

The violin set includes an extra set of strings and a spare bridge, which is nice to have for backups. I’ve read that strings significantly impact the sound, so I might upgrade in the future, but the ones included work just fine for now. I know my friends who play have violins that sound much better, but this Mendini set is a fantastic starter for the price. It sounds decent enough for my self-teaching endeavors.

Lastly, since I live in a remote area without access to lessons (and my school only has band, no orchestra), I’ve been using the

Essential Elements 2000 for Strings Plus DVD: Violin Book 1.

It’s straightforward to use and comes with a DVD (though I didn’t find it particularly helpful) and a very useful CD for playing along. I’ve also relied on YouTube for technique tips, like the bow hold, as those aren’t thoroughly covered in the book or DVD.

Overall, I’m very happy with this violin and highly recommend it, especially for adults seeking an affordable instrument to experiment with!

    March 2019 – First Review
Overall, this violin is impressive. It produces a beautiful sound—clear and crisp—far from the toy-like quality I initially expected.

    Let’s break it down:
Pros: Body and Bridge, Tailpiece, Case.
Cons: Pegs, Chinrest, End Pin, Bow.

The body is solid, and the paint finish creates a slightly mellower tone, which suits my preferences. While the paint job isn’t perfect, it won’t be a major concern since it won’t be on display.

The bridge is well-crafted, though I found the feet a bit high for my liking. I swapped it out for an old Aubert bridge from 2008, which significantly improved the sound, but the original bridges would have sufficed if necessary.

The bow, however, is not worth using; it’s poorly constructed and can be discouraging for beginners. The hair is decent, but you might as well keep it for spare parts.

The chinrest and endpin left much to be desired—both were rough and uncomfortable, resembling sandpaper on my chin. I replaced them right away.

On the positive side, the tailpiece is good! While it’s plastic rather than alloy, I prefer plastic for a tailpiece. I’m not a fan of the four fine tuners, so I replaced it as well, but I will keep the tailpiece for future use.

The pegs are functional, though I plan to replace them eventually; I still need to see how they perform.

Contrary to popular opinion, the rosin is perfectly usable; mine arrived intact. The shoulder rest does its job—it’s not as comfortable as a Wolf Secundo, but it’s functional if you don’t have one.

The case is the best I’ve encountered for a budget violin outfit; it fits snugly and gives me confidence that my violin will be protected.

The strings often receive criticism, but they are excellent for beginners. Don’t discard them; they are playable! I’m not fond of steel strings as they feel too thin, but if the violin is properly set up (especially the bridge), they produce a bright, clear sound—though perhaps a bit too bright for my taste.

    Modifications:
I invested an additional $17 to replace the chinrest, endpin, tailpiece, and bridge (the bridge was free, thanks to a spare I had). After about 30 minutes of adjusting the bridge and setting up the violin, I ended up with an instrument I’m extremely pleased with.

    February 2020 Update:
Unfortunately, the sound hasn’t opened up as much as I had hoped; I suspect the paint may be restricting it. If you’re looking for a violin that will improve significantly over time, I wouldn’t recommend this one. I made some substantial upgrades, including a new fingerboard (as the original wasn’t real ebony), a better tailpiece, chinrest, and planetary tuner pegs. It’s more enjoyable to play, but the sound still feels like it’s taking its time to develop.

The violin is absolutely GORGEOUS!! The craftsmanship is excellent, and the color is beautiful. It includes everything shown, and you can tell that all the components are of very high quality. It’s a fantastic value for what you get. I’m thrilled to know my son will be delighted with his new violin.

As a complete beginner to playing the violin, I was hesitant to invest a lot of money into something I might not stick with. After reading various reviews, I noticed a mix of positive and negative feedback, which made me cautious. However, the affordable price convinced me to give it a shot, and I’m really glad I did. This violin comes fully equipped with everything you need to start.

Following the reviews, I decided to restring each string (thanks to YouTube; I suggest doing it one string at a time) and applied a bit of rosin around the pegs. I did accidentally snap a string, but fortunately, the violin includes an extra set.

Once everything was set up (remember to loosen the strings to adjust the bridge if necessary), I focused on tuning it. My husband plays guitar, so we used electric tuners, but there are also handy apps for beginners. At first, I felt discouraged because the violin wouldn’t hold its tune for long, but my husband reassured me that this is normal with new strings. He was right; after a few days of practicing for about an hour each day, I found myself tuning it less frequently. The A and E strings took the longest to settle in, and the E string sounds scratchy no matter how I play, but that might be user error or a quality issue with the string. I haven’t tried switching brands yet, but I don’t think it will be too costly if I choose to.

The shoulder rest works well, provided you tighten everything properly, and the bow has been trouble-free aside from one loose piece I cut off when I first unboxed it. In terms of durability, everything is holding up nicely.

Overall, if you’re starting out or considering learning but are unsure about committing, I definitely recommend this violin.

I had an issue with the Mi String; its sound felt a bit cold. After lowering the bridge by 1.5mm on that side, it now perfectly matches the sound of a $1000 professional violin.

The build quality is decent, although the wood might not be the finest. As someone familiar with guitars and ukuleles, this is my first violin. It sounds good and is as loud as you’d expect. If you live in an apartment or with others, I highly recommend getting a mute. You’ll likely need to replace the strings, bow, and rosin soon, which may bring the total cost close to the violin’s price. It’s suitable for absolute beginners to get a feel for playing and to learn proper fingering and bowing techniques. I’m also considering new tuning pegs since there’s a small splinter where one meets the second hole.

This is the perfect violin for beginners, and the sound quality rivals that of much more expensive options. I appreciate the timely delivery, and the customer care representative was a pleasure to interact with. Thank you!
