I purchased this kalimba for my boyfriend, who has been wanting one for a while. It’s perfect for beginners or anyone looking to try it out without spending a lot. The quality is impressive for the price, and it includes everything needed to get started. There are plenty of easy kalimba tutorials on YouTube to help with learning and tuning, so you won’t need to buy extra booklets. It also comes with a handy black bag for storage and stickers to label the keys, but remember to position the stickers correctly to avoid affecting the tones.
My only complaint is that it arrived unprotected in its box, rather than in an Amazon bag or box, which spoiled the surprise a bit. 😒 Aside from that, it’s adorable and super easy to learn songs on. He’s only had it for two days and has already picked up “Bohemian Rhapsody.” I enjoy playing with it occasionally as well.
One thing to note about kalimbas in general (not just this brand) is that they aren’t very loud. You won’t have to worry about it being overly stimulating or annoying if someone is playing it, even if they’re not skilled. It’s quite subtle, and you can hardly hear it from another room, making it easy to tune out. Overall, I find the instrument calming and soothing.

I bought this kalimba as a Christmas gift, and the recipient absolutely loved it! I’m really glad I opened the box beforehand to check the enclosures. I was able to provide an in-person introductory lesson and some extra information for my friend, but that might not always be feasible.
This kalimba has fewer keys than mine, making it easier for those with smaller hands to hold and play. As a 4’11” woman, I definitely noticed the difference when I tried it out. The wood color is rich and warm—very appealing! Plus, it’s priced quite reasonably.
I deducted one star for the enclosures; they are incredibly confusing! I’ve been playing kalimba for nearly a year, and I struggled to decipher what the company was trying to communicate, so I can only imagine how difficult it would be for a complete beginner. (As someone who reads and writes legal documents, I can usually understand anything—except for these!)
Fortunately, the instructions that came with my first kalimba were much clearer, so I used those to help my gift recipient. I also created a small songbook with pieces I’ve learned online, complete with URLs for the best music sources.
Had I given this kalimba without any additional guidance, especially to someone not tech-savvy enough to seek out tuning information or sheet music, I fear it wouldn’t have been as well received and might have ended up collecting dust.

He took out the thumb covers and asked about the stickers that came with it; I suggested they might help him remember or see the notes better. We both ended up playing with it and even attempted to figure out how to play the Twisted Nerve song—keyword: attempted, but it was still a lot of fun! It’s comfortable to hold, and all the notes are clear, although the higher ones are a bit quieter. This instrument is great for all ages; it looks and sounds delightful, and it comes with a case, thumb covers, stickers, and a tuning hammer. I would definitely recommend it.

It’s time to let your thumb nails shine! This kalimba is truly exceptional, and at under $30, it’s one of the best gifts I’ve ever treated myself to.
The Unokki 17-Key Kalimba produces a beautiful tone and rich resonance, reminiscent of a music box combined with a heavenly harp—it’s incredibly soothing and calming. I’m happy to report that my Unokki kalimba has no dead tines at all. (For those unfamiliar, a “dead tine” refers to a key that sounds dull and lacks resonance. Many complaints about dead tines stem from poor playing technique. I once saw an Amazon demo where a player was hammering on the keys; remember, the hammer is meant for tuning, not for playing!) Even the higher notes ring out sweetly, though it’s natural for the outer keys to resonate less than the lower ones, owing to their shorter length. Additionally, it’s worth noting that older adults may not hear higher pitches as well as lower tones.
Crafted from quality tonewood, this lovely instrument offers a warm sound and is comfortable to hold. The satin matte finish and rounded edges make it a pleasure to play for extended periods without any discomfort. The decorative wood-burned design on the soundbox adds an elegant touch. If you’re unsure about how to play the kalimba, I recommend checking out some instructional videos on YouTube or picking up a book; both can greatly enhance your experience as a beginner.
This 17-key kalimba comes with a variety of accessories, including a tuning hammer, a small instruction booklet with songs, silicone thumb protectors (I suggest using your thumb nails instead), a soundbox sticker for note names and numbers (optional), magenta and turquoise tine stickers (optional), a black velveteen storage bag, and a tine-wiping cloth. The product box is designed for storage, but I advise investing in a proper kalimba case with compartments to keep everything organized (you don’t want the tuning hammer damaging your instrument).
While many buyers claim their kalimba was ready to play straight out of the box, that hasn’t been my experience with any adjustable musical instrument. I suspect those reviewers might be beginners or slightly tone-deaf. After shipping, most instruments need tuning, and the kalimba is no exception. I even had to re-space some of the tines on mine.
The Unokki booklet suggests using the free chromatic tuning apps gStrings for Android and insTuner for iOS. I found the Pano Tuner app, available for both platforms, to be very effective. I’m also considering purchasing an all-instrument clip-on tuner, as they are affordable and remind me of the accurate and quick Snark tuners I use for my guitars and ukuleles. Don’t be intimidated by tuning your kalimba; just read the instruction booklet, watch some videos, and tap gently. It’s easy and makes a significant difference in sound quality.
Many musicians and online resources recommend the Unokki 17-Key Kalimba over the very popular Gecko brand. While I haven’t tried the Gecko, I find the Unokki kalimba to be outstanding. I’m thrilled with its sound, performance, and quality, and believe it rivals many pricier kalimbas I’ve seen played by professional thumb pianists on YouTube. This instrument is definitely a keeper, and I’m so enamored with my Unokki kalimba that I can’t seem to put it down!
