As a newcomer to kalimba music, I was eager to try out this budget-friendly instrument. It arrived well-packaged and appears to be in tune right out of the box. After researching tuning apps, I decided to download the free Da Tuner app for any necessary adjustments in the future. Each of the 17 tines is clearly labeled with both note names and numbers. The sound produced by this kalimba is lovely, and I’m excited to start learning songs and composing my own music.

I was really inspired by the Kalimba cover songs on YouTube and decided I wanted one for myself. After browsing Amazon, I found this particular model with its smooth curves and great grip. I also watched some product videos on YouTube that showcased its sound quality. There was a delay in delivery due to pandemic restrictions, but it was absolutely worth the wait. I’ve already recommended it to my friends and family.
While playing the Kalimba can be challenging, even for those with a piano background, I assure you that once you get into the groove, it’s incredibly fun. I’m absolutely loving this instrument!

This instrument is both fantastic and budget-friendly! I got it for myself after my 9-year-old grandson expressed an interest in learning music, so he wouldn’t take it home and annoy his parents with the noise. Fortunately, it produces a beautiful sound reminiscent of a harp, and you can play it softly, which is perfect for practicing.
He absolutely fell in love with it and has been asking for one for his birthday, so I decided to get him one later this month. I genuinely enjoy playing it too, and I know it’s something he can grow into. Unlike those noisy flutes kids often get, this instrument can be used for a lifetime if he learns to play it.
The packaging was excellent, and it came with a tuning hammer and some stickers to label the notes on each key. While the keys are embossed with their notes, they can be hard to see unless you catch them in the right light, so I added the stickers until I get used to it.
It also includes two thumb guards, which are great since you play it with your thumbs. I’m almost ready to ditch the guards as I’m growing out my nails, and I’ve found it much easier to play with natural nails rather than silicone guards or thumb picks. The keys are closely spaced, so I sometimes bump the adjacent key while playing, but I expect that will improve as my nails grow.
Tuning was straightforward, thanks to online resources that listen to your notes and guide you on pitch. I found a great site that indicates whether the note is high or low, allowing you to gently tap it up or down with the hammer until you hit the right pitch. Just be careful not to overdo it, or you might end up with the wrong note!
The box it came in is perfect for storage, so I decided to decorate both boxes. These Kalimbas are beautiful but delicate, so keeping them safe ensures they won’t get knocked around in the bedroom.
Both instruments arrived in perfect condition and were easy to tune. I absolutely love them!

Right off the bat, I want to emphasize that this review is for the kalimba as a beginner’s instrument, not for those seeking a high-end professional model. I’ve only been playing kalimba for a short time, using my partner’s much more expensive alto kalimba, which I love. However, the alto has fewer keys and its layout is opposite to a standard 17-key kalimba, making it difficult to find tabs. Since I tend to dive into hobbies and quickly lose interest, I didn’t want to invest in an expensive kalimba without knowing if I’d stick with it.
That’s why I decided to try this kalimba. Priced just over $20, it seemed like a low-risk way to explore the instrument before committing to a pricier option. I was pleasantly surprised by my first impressions. The instrument is visually stunning, and the sound quality right out of the box is delightful. I may need to tune the farthest keys as they produce a bit of a buzz, but overall, it’s a solid instrument for such a low price.

I’ve attached a few photos and a video of the kalimba being played. You might hear the “buzzy” sound from the end keys in the video, but overall, it was well-tuned right out of the box. I haven’t made any adjustments aside from playing it a few times.
Overall, I think this kalimba is perfect for anyone looking to test the waters with the instrument. Its low price point makes it easy to dive in without pressure; if you decide it’s not for you, you can simply give it away, donate it, or let it sit on a shelf for occasional play. As a starter kalimba (barring any unexpected damage like some reviewers experienced), I give it a 5/5. It has everything a beginner would need at an unbeatable price. While it may not compare to high-end kalimbas in several areas, it provides a great way to explore this fascinating instrument. And when you’re ready to upgrade, you won’t feel like you’ve wasted any money or time with this little budget-friendly gem!

I’m not a musician, so I lack expertise, but I must say the product looks fantastic and sounds lovely. It arrived mostly tuned, and adjusting it with the little hammer was a breeze. I appreciated the additional learning materials they sent as a PDF after my purchase. Their customer service was also prompt when I had a question. The included accessories and dust bag are a nice touch. I believe it’s a great value for the price; it certainly doesn’t look cheap to me. While I bought it for myself, I think it would make a lovely gift as well. Some of the instructions were a bit unclear, but it was easy to find answers online. Overall, I’m very satisfied and would definitely recommend it.
